Madison County Commission discusses potential rezoning, other agenda items
MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — The Madison County Commission held their regular meeting Tuesday morning.

Early on the agenda was the possibility to accept the resignation of commissioner Arthur D. Johnson Jr. He has served in his role for 65 years.
He was the longest tenured county commissioner in all of the state.
“Just in general, a good person to everyone in the community. I’m talking about Democrats, Independents, Republicans. Commissioner Johnson always thought of the community first,” said Chairman of the Madison County Commission Mike Taylor.

It was also recognized that Commissioner Gary Deaton was in attendance after a recent medical issue.
“He too has been a longtime servant of Madison County. Really cares about this community. He has had some health issues and everyone was concerned about him. But he’s a tough marine and we’re glad to have him back,” said Taylor.

One of the big topics of discussion revolved around a potential rezoning for a property on Hailey Road. This is the Steinhauer Ranch.
They had future plans for an event space and veteran lodge. Quite a few community members came to speak out against this rezoning.

There was plenty of discussion between community members, the property owners, and county commissioners.
“The politics that affect you the most are your local politics. We encourage people to come to the county commission to have input whether you’re for or against. Whatever it may be. You have a right to be here,” said Taylor.
The vote ended with 12 in favor, 8 opposed, and 2 abstaining. It did not pass as it needed 13 votes to move forward.
After about an hour of discussion, the commissioners decided to cut off more talks to cast their votes.
