WBBJ 7 Forecast Update:

As the system moves out, the cold is going to dig in deep and stick around for several days. Temperatures will fall down to around 0° for both Sunday and Monday nights. On top of that, the winds will be steady as well and that will put the feels like temperatures between -10° and -15° at times too. Please stay inside and if you do go outside, limit the amount of time you are exposed to these frigid temperatures.

Here are some of the snow, ice and sleet reports the National Weather Service in Memphis has received from its Storm Spotter Network. I am sure some people have different numbers, some lower and some higher as far as ice and snow totals. Plus I am sure some people had trouble determining what was sleet and what was snow when they took their measurements.

Be sure to take necessary precautions tonight to take care of the Four P’s (People, Pets, Pipes & Plants). Although plants are not a worry this time of the year. An Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until noon Tuesday. The wind chill will get as low as -15° at times early next week!

People

Avoid going outside if it is not necessary. If you do, make sure you layer up from head to toe. Make sure your heat is set to an appropriate temperature to make sure your entire home is comfortable. Remember, heat rises so if you sleep upstairs, your room may be warmer than rooms downstairs. If you use a space heater, make sure to keep it away from anything that may be flammable including curtains, Christmas trees, bedding, etc. Also, do not keep it running overnight and do not keep it running in an unoccupied room. If you use a fireplace, make sure you have a screen to catch any embers that might escape or a rolling log. Never use your stove or oven to heat your home.

Pets

While protecting your family, it is imperative to protect your pets as well. Pets, like humans, are vulnerable to cold temperatures. If not taken care of properly, they can succumb to frostbite and even hypothermia. If you have a dog that typically lives outdoors, consider letting them inside when temperatures drop to freezing. While their fur does help to keep them warm, it provides little help in freezing temperatures. If you absolutely cannot bring them inside, make sure they have a warm shelter, plenty of food and fresh water so it does not freeze.

Pipes

Make sure to cover all your exposed pipes with a cover. You can also cover your pipes with towels, duct tape or another adhesive strip as long as they are wrapped tightly. Let your faucets drip throughout the night to keep them from freezing.

Lows tonight will fall down between 0° and 10° depending on if the skies clear out or not by the time the sun comes up Monday morning. The wind chill regardless will be below zero and at times falling down as low at -10°. The winds will be light out of the northwest but it will not take much of a breeze to create a wind chill with the temperatures in the single digits.

Monday is going to be very cold all day long but we would at least see the sun returning to our area. The sun will help melt some of the ice but the high temperatures will only make it up to around 20° so even if it melts, it will likely refresh quickly. The roads still will be very slick and difficult to drive on and that is why schools will be closed for most of next week. The wind chill all day on Monday will be sticking around into the single digits or low teens. Monday night lows will again fall down to around 0° with a wind chill below zero again Tuesday morning.

We should warm up a bit on Tuesday because the winds are going to return to the southwest. With all the snow and ice on the ground, temperatures will struggle to warm up above freezing. Highs will reach the low 30s and Tuesday night lows will down to the low teens. We are still expecting a sunny day again on Tuesday.

The next front is coming by on Wednesday but it looks like a dry front. Temperatures will only fall a few degrees but we will probably see more clouds on Tuesday that we will see on Monday or Tuesday. Highs will fall down the upper 20s on Thursday and Friday and we probably will stay below freezing until Sunday or Monday next week. The winds will have a northerly component to them from Wednesday evening through the weekend. The snow will stick around on the ground for many places all week long so do not be surprised if some schools are closed all of next week.
