Community members come together amid freezing temperatures

JACKSON, Tenn. — Many people are left without a warm place to stay during all of this winter weather.

There is a local business here in downtown Jackson that has not officially opened yet, but they still opened their doors to serve people over the last few days.

“Our Mayor Conger posted a thing on social media asking the town to come together,” said Hank Bussey, owner of the Collective Underground.

It is called the Collective Underground and Bussey is running the place. A few days ago, with this upcoming weather, he decided to make a big decision.

“I was like, well I got floor space. It is surely going to be better than them sleeping out on the ground. That was all I was going to offer was floor space, my own peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and coffee,” said Bussey.

And he tells us that he would not be able to do this alone and serve all of these people just by himself. He has had plenty of help getting this done.

“Jackson showed up. We’ve got people coming from everywhere to donate food and help. Now, we’re housing up to 21 people and we’re going to have to expand because we’re running out of space,” said Bussey.

Opening doors for people and helping them out an the community coming together is what Jackson and West Tennessee is all about.
