JMCSS releases statement concerning cancelation of athletics from Feb. 2-6
PRESS RELEASE FROM THE JACKSON MADISON COUNTY SCHOOLS OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS:
JACKSON, Tenn. — We are thrilled to see our young athletes thriving and achieving remarkable success. Our mission is clear: to introduce sports at an early age, building foundational skills that lead to stronger, more resilient athletes.
Unfortunately, recent challenges brought on by Mother Nature led to some misunderstandings among parents, prompting them to turn to various media sources for clarity.
At JMCSS, we take pride in addressing and combating misinformation head-on. We remain committed to transparency and ensuring that our community is well- informed. Together, we will continue to support our athletes and their growth.
With the middle school basketball state tournament set to begin next week, all regional competitions must be completed in order for teams to advance to sectionals on Saturday. This timeline has been set by the TSSAA. JMCSS does not control the schedule, and requests to extend district & region tournament windows were unsuccessful.
Allowing teams to compete on a day when schools are closed due to hazardous road conditions would expose the district to unnecessary safety risks and potential legal liability. When schools are closed due to hazardous conditions, teams do not travel or compete.
While this explanation may not fully ease the frustration surrounding the situation, please know these decisions are grounded in safety, policy, and fairness. All schools were held to the same standards under the same conditions.
