Greenfield School named a Top 5 ‘Bright Spot’ in state for beating the odds
GREENFIELD, Tenn. – Greenfield School has been named one of the Top 5 schools in Tennessee for beating the odds in 3rd grade reading, according to a new national analysis published by The 74, a nonprofit news organization focused on education across the country.
The recognition highlights schools that are helping students succeed in reading at rates much higher than expected when compared to their poverty rate. It uses data from state reading assessments alongside student poverty levels to identify which schools are best helping their students overcome barriers to learning. These schools are identified as “Bright Spots” — places where students are thriving because of strong teaching, focused support, and a belief that every child can learn.
For Greenfield School, the results are remarkable. Based on the school’s 28% poverty rate, the analysis predicted that 43% of students would be proficient readers by third grade. Instead, 79% of Greenfield students met or exceeded proficiency, far surpassing expectations and earning statewide recognition.
This success builds on Greenfield’s strong academic track record. The school is currently designated as a Reward School, earned an A on the Tennessee State Report Card, and holds a Level 5 growth designation — the highest level awarded by the state. Together, these honors reflect consistent progress, strong instruction, and a schoolwide commitment to meeting students where they are.
“This honor reflects the daily work happening in our classrooms,” said Jamie Doster, Principal of Greenfield School. “Our teachers believe deeply in every child’s ability to learn and grow, and they ensure students receive the support they need, both academically and emotionally. It means so much to see that work making a difference for our students.”
Director of Schools Jeff Cupples praised Greenfield’s commitment to responding to each child’s unique learning needs with intention and care.
“This shows what’s possible when students are at the center of every decision,” shared Cupples. “Greenfield’s success reflects the power of focused teaching, strong relationships, and student effort. We’re proud of the work that made this possible.”
Third grade is a key milestone in a child’s education. It’s the point where students move from learning to read to reading to learn. Strong reading skills at this stage help students succeed in all subjects and set the foundation for future academic success. Students who are confident readers by the end of third grade are more likely to stay engaged in school and reach important milestones later on.
Weakley County Schools is proud to once again be nationally recognized for the work our schools do each day to educate, support, and care for students.
