A Celebration of Life for Imogene Johnson-Yarbrough, age 87, of Lexington, TN., will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church in Lexington, Tennessee. Family visitation will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with funeral services to follow. Family and friends are invited to attend and honor her life and legacy. Burial will follow at Lexington City, Cemetery.
Obituary
Imogene was born on September 8, 1938, in Lexington, Tennessee, to Samuel Johnson Sr. and Lizzie Mae Johnson. From an early age, her parents instilled in her the values of faith, family, and perseverance principles she carried with her throughout her life. She was a faithful and devoted member of Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church Lexington TN, where she served on the Mother’s Board, took part in Sunday School and Bible Study, and chaired the church Outreach Program. Through this ministry, she faithfully ministered to the sick, shut-in, and bereaved throughout the city by sending cards, flowers, and messages of encouragement. She was also a proud member of the Golden Age Club, an affiliate of Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Nashville, Tennessee.
Imogene attended Montgomery School in Lexington, Tennessee, where she completed her elementary and high school education, graduating in 1957. It was there that her love for basketball began. Imogene was an outstanding athlete; she excelled as a forward on the Montgomery High School basketball team. While determination, leadership, and school pride were her main priority. In 1956, the team advanced to the Tennessee State Tournament and was runner-up in the State Championship Game to Burt High School of Clarksville, Tennessee, where the renowned Wilma Rudolph was a member of the team. Imogene received many trophies that currently grace the halls of Montgomery School. Her most memorable honor came when Imogene was inducted into the Henderson County Sports Hall of Fame, Class of 2014.
Imogene was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Johnson Sr., and Lizzie Mae Johnson; husband, Grady Yarbrough; son, Dean Morris Johnson; and siblings, William Earl Johnson, Virginia Ann Campbell, Clint Harmon Johnson, and Rose Marie Everett.
Imogene, affectionately known as “T.T.” and “Granny”, leaves to cherish her loving memory of a devoted daughter-in-law, Rosalind Johnson; beloved grandchildren, Sedric Crawford (Shawanda), and Devan Johnson; great-grandchildren, Andrew Crawford and Jamescia Mason; great-great-grandchild, Emery Esaw; siblings, Samuel Johnson Jr., Beulah Leana Gordon, Arlinda Johnson, James Massey and Shirley Payne and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever hold her in their hearts.
Imogene was known for her warm heart, gentle spirit, and unwavering love for her family. She dedicated her life to caring for others and was a source of strength, wisdom, and comfort to all who knew her. Her kindness, joyful laughter, and encouraging words left an impression on everyone she met. Imogene enjoyed basketball, church fellowship, cooking, and baking. Her presence brought light and joy to every room she entered. Her legacy of faith, resilience, and devotion to family will continue to live on through the many lives she touched. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered with love.
