Terry Smith announces candidacy for Haywood County sheriff.

HAYWOOD COUNTY, Tenn. — Terry Smith has announced his candidacy for Haywood County sheriff.

“I, Terry Smith would like to announce my candidacy for Sheriff of Haywood County. I moved to Haywood County in 2000 after serving my country in the Army for 14 years. I worked for TDOT for 2 years prior to being employed by the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office in 2003.

Through out my law enforcement career here at the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office I have held the rank of Sergeant, Lieutenant, and for the past 8 years I have served as the Chief Deputy under the leadership of Sheriff Billy Garrett Jr. My current duties as Chief Deputy are overseeing all daily operations at the Sheriff’s Office, Jail, and court security.

I have served as the training officer, range master, and general departmental instructor. My training includes:

  • Correctional Officer basic training
  • Basic police school
  • Criminal investigation
  • Firearms instructor
  • Internal Affairs Investigation and the discipline process
  • Sexual Assault
  • Incident command system
  • Standardized field sobriety testing
  • Basic terrorism course
  • Instructor development course
  • Basic terrorism liaison officer (TLO) course
  • Interview and interrogation

If I am elected as the Haywood County Sheriff, I will continue to restore trust, strengthen public safety and provide strong accountable leadership for our deputies, correctional officers, and community. As Sheriff I will continue to lead with integrity and transparency. I will prioritize the safety of the deputies and correctional officers, partnerships with residents, faith leaders, schools, local industries, and local organizations.
