MPD officer released from hospital after shooting; investigators release timeline as suspect remains at large

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A Memphis police officer who was shot last week during a traffic stop has been released from the hospital.

Memphis police say Officer Oscar Torres-Molina was released on Sunday and will continue his recovery at home.

The suspect accused of shooting Torres-Molina, Danell Jarvis Maxwell, remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous.

On Monday, MPD released the timeline of the shooting and provided an update on the investigation:

Thursday, February 26, 2026

8:09 p.m. — Officer Torres-Molina initiated a traffic stop on a white Nissan Maxima at Perkins Road and Aloha Avenue.

8:11 p.m. — Officer Torres-Molina advised that shots had been fired and requested immediate assistance. Within five minutes, additional officers arrived on the scene, immediately began rendering aid, and transported Officer Torres-Molina to the hospital.

Officers on the scene located evidence that led to the identification of Danell Jarvis Maxwell as the suspect.

8:21 p.m. — The white Nissan Maxima was located wrecked and abandoned in the 4600 block of Wooddale. Officers from MPD, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, and the Memphis Safe Streets Task Force launched an extensive search. Drones were deployed, the Aviation Unit was activated, and uniform patrol officers and K-9 teams attempted to locate Maxwell. Multiple locations associated with Maxwell were checked throughout the night.

8:30 p.m. — Officer Torres-Molina arrived at the hospital and was admitted in critical condition.

The search continued into the early morning hours.

Friday, February 27, 2026

12:02 a.m. — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation issued a statewide Blue Alert for Danell Maxwell, stating he was wanted for attempted first-degree murder of a police officer.

12:28 a.m. — A warrant was issued charging Danell Maxwell with attempted first-degree murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.

2:28 a.m. — Based on information received regarding a gray Chevrolet Malibu, officers conducted a traffic stop at South Third Street and Horn Lake Road. The vehicle was driven by an acquaintance of Maxwell. The female driver was detained and transported to 170 North Main for further investigation after providing information that Maxwell may have been in West Memphis, Arkansas. The woman was later released and at this time not facing charges.

2:35 a.m. — The West Memphis Police Department was notified regarding information about Maxwell’s possible location.

9:01 a.m. — TBI added Danell Jarvis Maxwell to Tennessee’s Most Wanted List.

After days of treatment and recovery, Officer Torres-Molina was released from the hospital.

There is a $2,500 cash reward being offered for any information leading to the arrest of Danell Jarvis Maxwell. TBI says he was last seen wearing dark clothing and an orange/green reflective vest. He is 5′10″ and weighs approximately 180 pounds.
