Daycare employee charged with assault following child abuse investigation

NEWBERN, Tenn. (WMC) – An employee at a Newbern daycare is behind bars following reports of a child abuse incident.

Newbern police say 22-year-old Savannah Alexander has been charged after officers conducted an investigation in response to reports of an assault at Smarty Tots Too daycare in Newbern. The alleged incident occurred in December. Alexander is an employee at the daycare.

“The safety and well-being of our children is one of the highest priorities of the Newbern Police Department,” said Newbern Police Chief Greg Barr. “We take any report involving alleged abuse very seriously and are committed to conducting thorough and professional investigations. We appreciate the cooperation of the families and staff involved during this process.”

Alexander is facing two counts of assault and is scheduled to appear before a Newbern Municipal Court judge, where bond will be determined.
