Allergy season arrives in West Tennessee. What to know for you and your pets

JACKSON, Tenn. — From watery eyes to constant sneezing, many people across West Tennessee are already feeling the effects of allergy season, and so are their pets.

Megan Jones, a nurse practitioner with McCulley Allergy, Sinus, and Asthma Center in Jackson, said those who have not started taking allergy medications by Valentine’s Day are already behind.

“Pollen season is a beast. Tree pollen is in the spring,” Jones said. “We’ll start to have our yellowing of the cars and you can see it and you can feel it.”

Symptoms and treatment options

As temperatures warm, symptoms including congestion, sneezing, and itchy eyes, nose and throat can flare up. Jones said a personalized health plan can help manage those symptoms.

“We do some tests to figure out what’s triggering things, and we can talk about avoidance measures of those allergens which can help,” Jones said. “It’s hard to avoid going outside. You don’t want to get rid of your pets. So what do you do?”

Jones said allergy shots are one option. For those choosing over-the-counter medications, health professionals advise against taking Benadryl.

“I’d shift more to the Claritin, Zyrtec, Xyzal, Allegra, nasal sprays like Flonase, Nasacort can be super valuable,” Jones said.

Pets can suffer from seasonal allergies too

Amber Spearman, director of PetVet Care Centers, said seasonal allergies are among the most common reasons for vet visits in the area.

“Dermatology visits, so that itchy skin, you know, infected ears, watery eyes, they’re one of the highest percentages of vet visits in this area,” Spearman said.

Spearman said pet owners should watch for itching, scratching, paw licking and irritated skin. In mild cases, oatmeal pet allergy shampoo and pet wipes for their feet may help. Consulting a veterinarian for treatment is recommended.
