Meta sued for $375 million over alleged child safety, privacy violations
JACKSON, Tenn. — The lawsuit against Meta, Facebook’s parent company, could impact the way we use social media.
Meta was sued in a New Mexico lawsuit for $375 million for allegedly misleading parents and kids about the safety and privacy on their platforms.
The lawsuit highlights how parents are concerned about how protected their kids are on digital platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp.
We asked one parent who allows YouTube and TikTok if her kids have access to Facebook.
“No its too much for Facebook, I’m 34 and I can only take so much on Facebook. It’s very influential to younger children, its changed a lot, you see things on Facebook that you should not see,” said Brynn Hogans, mother of three.
Different platforms have different ways and rules as for how they handle minor, as well as adult, privacy and safety. The same goes for parents, one parent tells us how things are done in their home.
“When I was young we didn’t have it, and I don’t think it’s necessary. I think it’s a good networking tool, I use it in my business in real estate, and also as an elected official. I think people get sucked into those things too much, I can see myself doing it at times. I think there’s so much great things in the world like today’s a beautiful day,” said Tony Neihoff, district three commissioner and father of four.
As questions about privacy and security continue to grow, this lawsuit has the potential to shape how social media platforms are held accountable in the future.
After a California jury found Google and Meta liable in a different lawsuit, Senator Blackburn wrote a statement, she says “Today’s verdict marks a monumental victory for parents, children, families, and survivors who have taken big tech to court to demand accountability after having the door slammed in their face by these social media companies for years.”
