Jackson nonprofit helps survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault find their voice
JACKSON, Tenn. — It’s Women’s History Month and as communities honor those who fought for progress, advocates say the fight for safety and healing continues right here at home.
Behind closed doors and silent phone calls, advocates here are helping survivors find their voice again.
“No one should suffer in silence,” said Mamie Hutcherson, executive director of WRAP.
The Women’s and Men’s Rape Assistance Program, also known as WRAP, has been advocating for survivors since 1975. During women’s history month, we celebrate strength and for many, it begins with asking for help.
“A lot of people are under the conception—the misconception that she should just leave. Well, when a survivor gets ready to leave, that is the most dangerous time,” said Hutcherson.
WRAP professionals are here to support victims start a new life, independent and away from abuse. For 51 years, they have provided free and confidential support, encouraging survivors every step of the way.
“People need to know it happens. We’re here. You know, it’s not something to be ashamed of,” said Hutcherson.
Just this year alone, the Jackson Police Department has investigated five homicides, three of which were related to domestic violence.
“This cause, this—domestic violence and sexual assault is a silent scourge in our society that people just don’t know,” said Hutcherson
But this work isn’t just about women, it’s about helping anyone in our community who needs help. Hutcherson encourages community members to get involved and one way to do that is to give back.
“Personal hygiene products, clothing for adults and children. Right now, we have a need for summer clothes,” said Hutcherson.
Another way to get involved is through WRAP’s largest annual fundraising event, Denim and Pearls. Funds raised will go towards the nonprofit’s work to end violence, change lives, and give hope.
