Escaped Crockett County inmate faces new charges, sheriff’s office admits trustee assignment was a mistake

CROCKETT COUNTY, Tenn. (WBBJ/WMC) — An inmate who escaped from the Crockett County Jail on March 25 is back in custody and faces additional state and federal charges.

Gerald “Pete” Samples escaped at approximately 4:41 a.m. on March 25. He was recaptured Saturday, March 28, in a wooded area along Humboldt Gibson Wells Road and is now being held in maximum security at the Obion County Sheriff’s Office.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation added Samples to the state’s Most Wanted list on Friday and offered a $3,500 reward. The vehicle he allegedly stole was found in Gibson County.

Samples was arrested on a violation of probation warrant out of Crockett County Circuit Court in August 2025. He was served with warrants out of Virginia on Feb. 12 for alleged illegal online activity involving a juvenile victim in July 2024.

How the escape happened

According to the Crockett County Sheriff’s Department, Samples stole a spare key to a patrol car that was unassigned to a deputy due to the officer being on medical leave. He used the key to steal the car and escape through the back door of the jail during the time trustees begin preparing breakfast.

The Crockett County Sheriff’s Office said assigning Samples trustee duties after being charged was a mistake. Samples had previously served as a trustee for decades and had a prior escape in 2020.

An investigation into the escape is ongoing and charges for an accomplice have been filed.

New charges filed

Following the escape, Samples now faces state charges of felony escape and felony theft .

He is also facing several federal charges, including enticement and attempted enticement of a minor using a means or facility of interstate commerce to engage in illegal sexual activity, production and attempted production of child pornography, receipt and attempted receipt of child pornography, and knowingly transferring obscene matter to a person under 16.

Samples is due in federal court Tuesday in Jackson.

Court appearance history

Samples appeared in Crockett County General Sessions Court multiple times on the fugitive warrant out of Virginia. He was served Feb. 12 and did not waive extradition at a Feb. 19 appearance. The case was continued March 5 and March 19. His next court date for status of extradition is April 16.

For the violation of probation warrant, Samples appeared in Crockett County Circuit Court on Oct. 10, 2025, and Feb. 9. His next scheduled court date is June 8.

Trustee program under review

The Crockett County Sheriff’s Office has operated a trustee program for decades. Trustees perform supervised work including meal preparation, cleaning, laundry, litter pickup, vehicle maintenance, and assisting county agencies and nonprofits.

The sheriff’s office said the trustee program remains valuable but the incident makes clear that the risk-assessment process must be strengthened. A full internal review of trustee selection criteria and procedures has been launched.
