Investigation continues in fatal weekend shooting at Lane College
JACKSON, Tenn. — Just days after a deadly shooting on the campus of Lane College, grief is settling in across the community. Police say the shooting occurred Saturday night inside Williamson Hall.

The victim, a 19-year old male, was found suffering from a gunshot wound and later died at a local hospital, according to the Jackson Police Department.
According to investigators, preliminary findings suggest the shooting may not have been an intentional act. One person of interest has been detained and police say they are not looking for any additional suspects.
Officials also emphasize this appears to be an isolated incident as the investigation into what happened, and why, continues.
In a statement, Lane College said, “The recent passing of a lane college student is a tragic loss, deeply felt across our campus and the broader community. Our students are the heart of the college, and we mourn this loss together. Lane College operates under a strict weapon-free policy, which remains in effect. We are taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff, and are fully cooperating with the Jackson Police Department as their investigation continues. We extend our thoughts and prayers to the family, friends, and loved ones of the student, and we ask that their privacy be respected during this incredibly difficult time. As a community, we will continue to support one another with strength, compassion, and care in the days ahead.”
With safety concerns rising, the college says it remains under a strict weapon-free policy. Officials are taking precautions to protect students, faculty and staff, while fully cooperating with law enforcement.
A candlelight vigil will be taking place Monday evening on campus. In consideration of the campus community and those impacted by the tragic incident, officials say the event is closed to the public at this time.
Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting at Lane College.
