College student charged with reckless homicide appears in court
JACKSON, Tenn. — A 19-year old appeared in Jackson City Court on Wednesday for a preliminary hearing after facing charges in the shooting death of a college student.
Zavon Luckett, Jr, is charged with reckless homicide in connection to the shooting death of Devin Parker, junior, that occurred over a week ago. Parker, a student from Memphis, was shot and killed on Saturday, March 28, at Williamson Hall on the campus of Lane College.
The preliminary investigation, supported by witness statements, indicates that Luckett Jr. was handling a firearm in a reckless manner when the weapon discharged.
According to the arrest affidavit, one witness said he was in his room watching television with two females when Luckett arrived with one other individual. The witness said he “handed Luckett his 9mm handgun at some point while inside the room,” according to the affidavit. The witness told investigators, according to the affidavit, that they were “joking around” with the gun when it accidentally fired and struck Parker.
According to the affidavit, Luckett said “he and his roommate were inside a friend’s room at Lane College” and that he and Parker “both had firearms and pointed the guns at each other in a joking manner playing around. Luckett stated that his gun accidentally discharged” and struck Parker in the chest.
During Wednesday’s hearing, Judge Blake Henderson gave Luckett 30 days to acquire an attorney. He is expected back in court May 20 at 9:30 a.m.
