PROVO, Utah (AP) — Lawyers for the man charged with killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk have asked to delay a preliminary hearing scheduled in May, saying they need time to review an enormous amount of material and a bullet analysis that could contribute to his defense.

Tyler Robinson’s defense team said in recent court filings that an analysis from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, a federal law enforcement agency, could not conclusively connect a bullet fragment recovered during an autopsy to the rifle found near the scene. The FBI is running additional tests, according to court documents.

The agency’s report has been kept private, but attorneys have cited snippets in other public filings that say the results were inconclusive.

The success of a forensic ballistics analysis largely depends on the size and condition of the bullet fragments. Experts are looking for unique, microscopic markings that are left on a bullet as it passes through the gun’s barrel. The scratches are like fingerprints in that no two firearms make identical markings.

The defense said in its motion that it may try to use the analysis to clear Robinson of blame during the preliminary hearing, while prosecutors aim to show they have enough evidence against him to proceed with a trial.

Prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty for Robinson, 22, who is charged with aggravated murder in the Sept. 10 shooting of the conservative activist on the Utah Valley University campus in Orem. Robinson has not yet entered a plea.

Prosecutors have said DNA consistent with Robinson’s was found on the trigger of the rifle, the fired cartridge casing and two unfired cartridges. Defense attorneys note that forensic reports indicate multiple people’s DNA was found on some items, which they say requires a more complex analysis.

Robinson reportedly texted his romantic partner that he targeted Kirk because he “had enough of his hatred,” prosecutors have said.

Robinson is due back in court April 17 for a hearing on a defense motion to ban cameras from the courtroom.

MARION COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF/Gray News) – Video of a school resource officer in South Carolina hitting a high school baseball player in the head with a stun gun has gained national attention.

Details leading up to the hit that is making its way around social media are unknown.

Bryan Brockington took the video that shows a deputy putting the student-athlete in a headlock before hitting him in the head with a stun gun after a baseball game at Pee Dee Academy.

According to Sports Illustrated, the baseball player had the only hit for his Robert Lee Academy Cavaliers in a 7-0 loss to Pee Dee Academy.

The video shows a crowd formed around the two as the headlock continued before the baseball player got on his knees.

You can hear the deputy ask where the other fellow was, and another person later appears in the video in handcuffs.

Arguments continued as the deputy claimed the baseball player had stepped on his foot and told him to get off.

The deputy added that the baseball player “isn’t going to talk to him that way.”

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said the deputy in question has been reassigned pending an investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/Gray News/AP) — Former reality TV star Joseph Duggar had his first court appearance Tuesday morning in Florida.

The 31-year-old appeared at the Bay County Courthouse, where his bond was set at $600,000.

He was ordered to have no contact with the victim and no unsupervised contact with minors.

Duggar is charged with lewd and lascivious behavior on a child under 12 years old, according to an arrest affidavit from the Bay County Sheriff’s Office in Panama City, Florida.

Authorities have also filed charges against him and his wife, Kendra Duggar, 27, in Arkansas, the Tontitown Police Department said in a statement Friday. The charges include four counts of endangering the welfare of a minor and four counts of false imprisonment.

The charges come almost five years after Joseph Duggar’s older brother Josh was convicted of downloading child sexual abuse images. The brothers and their family starred in the TLC show “19 Kids and Counting,” which was canceled after Josh Duggar’s arrest.

Tontitown police officers contacted sheriff’s deputies in the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday, saying they had interviewed a 14-year-old girl who told them that Joseph Duggar had molested her several times during a family trip to Panama City Beach when she was 9, the affidavit said.

The child’s father confronted Joseph Duggar about the abuse last week, and the father said Joseph Duggar admitted to it, the affidavit said. Police officers in Tontitown had the father call Joseph Duggar with a detective on the line, and he again admitted to the actions.

TLC’s “19 Kids and Counting” followed the lives of devout Baptists Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar and their 19 children, all of whose names began with the letter “J.”

TLC canceled the show in 2015 following allegations that Josh Duggar had molested four of his sisters and a babysitter years earlier. Josh Duggar’s parents said he had confessed to the fondling and apologized.

Josh Duggar was sentenced in 2022 to about 12 1/2 years in prison on one count each of receiving and possessing images portraying child sexual abuse.

Joseph Duggar’s next court date is April 20.

According to the press release, Baker also refused to get out of the truck, and deputies had to use PepperBall rounds to get him out.

Baker was taken to the hospital for minor injuries from the crash. Authorities say Baker’s blood alcohol content was 0.103, which is over the legal limit.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The Chicago Bulls waived guard Jaden Ivey on Monday in the wake of anti-LGBTQ comments and remarks about religion he made in videos on his Instagram account.

“They proclaim Pride Month in the NBA,” he said. “They proclaim it. They show it to the world. They say come join us for Pride, for Pride Month to celebrate unrighteousness. They proclaim it. They proclaim it on the billboards. They proclaim it in the streets. Unrighteousness. So how is it that one can’t speak righteousness? How are they to say that this man is crazy?”

Coach Billy Donovan said the Bulls have employees from “all different walks of life” and Ivey’s comments don’t reflect the values of the organization.

“Everybody comes with their own personal experiences, but one is we’ve got to all be professional,” Donovan said prior to Chicago’s game at San Antonio. “I think there’s got to be a high level of respect for one another, and we’ve got to help each other and then be accountable to those standards.”

In an Instagram live conducted on an airplane hours after the Bulls let him go, Ivey again spoke at length about religion. He said the championship rings LeBron James and Michael Jordan earned are “not gonna matter on judgment day.”

He also insisted he “didn’t get myself waived” and that other teams won’t sign him because they think “he’s too religious.” He said he was in the gym, rehabbing and “doing what was required of me in my job” on Monday.

At one point, a flight attendant asked him to end the session because the plane was about ready to depart and the cellphone could interfere with the communication systems. He continued to discuss religion for about another minute before wrapping it up.

Ivey has spoken this season about dealing with depression. He recently started posting lengthy videos expressing his thoughts about religion on Instagram.

“How is it when the gospel is preached that people hate it?” Ivey said. “That people don’t want to hear it? And they think it’s strange when someone preaches the gospel, the true gospel?”

Chicago acquired Ivey from Detroit in a three-team trade on Feb. 3. He had an expiring contract.

The Bulls shut him down for the remainder of the season last week after being sidelined since Feb. 11 with a sore left knee. He averaged 8.5 points in 37 games this season, including four for Chicago.

“I don’t want to get into what he put out there, but certainly, I hope for him he’s okay,” Donovan said. “I’ve had conversations with Jaden and he’s always been about rehabbing his knee and trying to get on the court and wanting to play. But I think organizationally, there are certain standards we want to have as an organization and try to live up to those each and every day.”

ELLSWORTH, Kan. (KWCH/Gray News) – A young child fired a shotgun, shooting two siblings and killing one of them, according to investigators.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said a 5-year-old is dead and an 8-year-old is critically injured after the shooting.

A 911 call made around 3:15 p.m. Saturday reported that two children were severely injured in a shooting in Ellsworth, Kansas.

Authorities responded to a home and found a 5-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy with critical injuries.

Despite life-saving measures, the 5-year-old child died at the scene. The 8-year-old child was flown to a hospital, where he is in critical condition.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said preliminary information indicates that a young child picked up a loaded, unsecured shotgun and fired it, shooting the two children.

Ellsworth County Sheriff Kenny Bernard shared ways to keep tragedies like this one from happening.

He said guns should be kept locked in a gun cabinet or gun safe.

“When you’re done with the shoot, you should empty your firearm in the field, carry it back to your vehicle, safely store it in the vehicle, away from the ammunition as well,” Bernard said.

The investigation is ongoing.

LELAND, N.C. (WECT/Gray News) – Two day care workers are under investigation after a mother claimed her 3-year-old son was assaulted twice.

The alleged assaults happened at Childcare Network in Leland, North Carolina.

Two teachers have been suspended after one allegedly sprayed a bottle of soapy water into the boy’s mouth and the other is accused of trapping him in a closet until he stopped crying.

A teacher reported the two incidents and recorded a video of the boy being trapped in the closet.

“It made me cry. I was in distress. I felt so bad for my baby,” said Leslie Hough, the boy’s mother.

Hough said the teacher told her the incidents happened in December and January. Hough has since pulled him out of day care.

“My child is traumatized from this. I mean, he’s not even wanting to go to day care,” Hough said.

Police are investigating, and Childcare Network is doing its own “internal review.”

“The safety and well-being of the children and families we serve is our highest priority,” Childcare Network said in a statement. “We are committed to ensuring that every child in our care is in a safe, nurturing, and high-quality environment, and we will take every step necessary to uphold that commitment.”

Hough said her son did not deserve what happened to him.

“I think my son is one of the most loving kids you’ll ever be around. He’s full of energy,” she said. “How could you hurt a precious little boy that you are always in his face and you’re smiling and you’re ‘Hey Jamari. How you doing Jamari? Jamari, come with me,’ but the whole time you’re assaulting him.”

Hough said she would like to see the day care’s director fired and the teachers charged.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — As National Walking Day encourages more people to get outside, AAA warns that warmer temperatures, spring events, and rising gas prices will drive a sharp increase in foot traffic, raising the risk of pedestrian crashes on busy roads and intersections.

“Pedestrians face the greatest risk in traffic because they have no protection in a crash,” said Megan Cooper, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Even low-speed collisions can result in serious or fatal injuries.”

Pedestrian Fatalities Remain High Despite Slight Decline

A report from the Governors Highway Safety Association reveals that pedestrian deaths are increasing at a faster rate than overall traffic fatalities. In 2024, drivers struck and killed 7,148 pedestrians in the United States. Of those deaths:

  • One in four are the result of a hit-and-run crash
  • More than three-quarters occur after dark
  • Nearly two-thirds occurred in locations without a sidewalk

“Pedestrians do not have a seat belt, airbags, or a steel frame to protect them,” continued Cooper. “That reality makes awareness critical for everyone on the road.”

AAA Safety Tips for Pedestrians

  • Use sidewalks and crosswalks
  • Make eye contact before crossing
  • Stay off phones and headphones
  • Wear bright or reflective clothing at night

AAA Safety Tips for Drivers

  • Slow down near pedestrian zones
  • Watch for walkers near schools, parks, and events
  • Eliminate distractions behind the wheel
  • Yield at crosswalks and intersections
  • Use extra caution at night

Bottom Line

As spring activity ramps up across Tennessee and National Walking Day approaches on April 1, AAA reminds everyone that safety is a shared responsibility. Whether you’re walking or driving, attention saves lives.
