Law Enforcement Shredding Event Destroys Thousands of Documents

JACKSON, Tenn.- Dozens of West Tennesseans took advantage of an event Friday to help them fight identity theft. Jackson Police, The Madison County Sheriff’s Department and other state groups conducted a document shredding event, providing a safe place for residents to discard any personal or private documents. State officials said identity theft is a growing crime, not just in Tennessee, but across the country. Law enforcement said it is all too easy to become a victim. “Identity theft is a real problem in the state of Tennessee,” said Trooper Brad Simpson of the Tennessee Highway Patrol. “It’s on the rise. it is a growing crime and that’s why an operation like this is so important, it is to get rid of those documents that contain that information.” Organizers said hundreds showed up to discard their documents and keep them out of the hands of identity thieves.
