Local Gardeners Preparing for Spring Weather

SOUTH JACKSON, Tenn. – Spring has unofficially sprung in West Tennessee! The sunshine and warm spring-like temperatures awakened the gardening bug in many local gardeners. R&J Seed and Supply says they were prepared for high traffic through their store. After a long winter, they joke that you get an itching to get outside and give your garden a much needed makeover. Debbie Gaugh is a sales associate and says it’s going to be a busy weekend but she’s very excited to season has arrived. She explains, “My goodness, we have been running around like chicken with our head off today! We’ve been so busy but we’re prepared, we’ve had most of winter to get ready.” Many items like horse feeds, fertilizer, seeds, and even baby chicks are all common items that many gardener will stock up on this early in the season. There are a few items though that are always in a high demand this time of the year because of the unpredictable weather in West Tennessee. Store manager, Ginger Kemp explains that cabbage, lettuce, broccoli, and even strawberries are all things that won’t suffer from the weather if it decides to turn cold again. Kemp says, “I get really tired of it being cold and you want to get out. I think a lot of it is the time change so in the afternoon it’s lighter out so people have more time to work at their house when they get off work.” she says, “We have a lot more energy because of the extra hour of daylight!” The official first day of the spring is next Wednesday, March 20th.
