JACKSON, Tenn.-A new study at McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport could keep travelers safer. A team will survey wildlife at the airport in Jackson. The Federal Aviation Administration requires airports across the country to participate in a wildlife hazard assessment. “The point is to try to determine what species might cause a risk to aviation operations,” said Russ DeFusco, vice president of Bash, Inc. DeFusco estimates the survey will cost just under $70,000. DeFusco said the goal is to cut down on wildlife strikes and casualties. “The wildlife strikes in the United States cost the aviation industry over $4 billion per year in direct and indirect costs,” he said. The survey should take about a year.
