Photo reportedly shows cougar in Obion County

OBION COUNTY, Tenn. — A recent photo of a cougar seen on private property has many Obion County residents on edge. Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency officials are saying the photo is indeed real. “This is the first verifiable report we’ve had of a cougar in West Tennessee,” TWRA official Alan Peterson said. According to Peterson, the cougar’s appearance may be part of a trend of cougars expanding their territory. Some Obion residents say they are sure more cougars are in the area. “There’s more than one cougar down here,” resident Bill Hamm said. “They’ve been spotted all over the place.” According to TWRA officials, it’s illegal to kill cougars in the state of Tennessee. They say cougars should not be considered dangerous. Residents who see a cougar are advised to alert authorities immediately.
