Girl Scout’s project brings impressive addition to Madison Academic campus

JACKSON, Tenn. — Girl Scouts are known to build courage, confidence, and various skills that will help them not only in their lives, but in the community.

Amanda Smith is a recent graduate of Madison Academic High School. Amanda first joined the Girl Scouts in the 1st grade, and is now going for the highest award in Girl Scouts.

“This is my Girl Scout Gold Award project,” Amanda said. “It is a gift to Madison Academic.”

Amanda chose to create “Arts in Education” in the form of the Madison Mustang as her project.

Her Girl Scout leader Dee Dee Rives has this to say.

“Well when her horse was revealed, tears came to my eyes, because I had not seen it, other than just a little bit, pieces of her wielding,” Rives said.

Amy Smith, the mother of Amanda, shares the determination behind the project.

“I’m really impressed with her vision, her artistic ability, staying with it,” Amy said. “She never complained about the heat in a fabrication shop.”

Rives talks about Amanda’s final steps in order to gain the gold.

“She has one more step to receive her Gold Award,” said Rives. “It’s the survey that we asked the people that attended today to fill out.”

Amy shares some insights on the growth that being in Girl Scouts can bring.

“I think it helps them in the long run to see how, you know, not everything goes smoothly,” Amy said. “And you learn that when you get older, that things happen, you know and to be prepared to make adjustments, and try different ways if it didn’t turn out like you thought it would.”

The new Mustang is located at Madison Academic High School to be enjoyed by the entire school’s community.
