DYERSBURG, Tenn. — There’s one pumpkin patch in Dyersburg growing a lot more than fall’s most famous decoration. More that 3,000 pumpkins have found a temporary home at First Christian Church. “People know that we are the ‘pumpkin patch church’,” Children’s Pastor Greg Bryant said. These pumpkins are for more than just decorations or pies, but every dollar spent on a pumpkin is used to feed a family for the coming holiday season. “What makes this so remarkable is this is not really our church doing this, because every family that comes to buy a pumpkin is, in effect, helping to buy a meal,” Pastor Bryan Grow said. For 12 years now, people have been able to buy pumpkins large and small, homemade decorations, and hay bales to help this worthy cause. Pastor Grow said the church puts together a Thanksgiving dinner box for hundreds of families in the area. “This isn’t your traditional little can of corn and a small turkey. These are huge boxes that could feed a family probably for a week. There is so much food and it’s really neat to be a part of it,” Pastor Grow said. Pastor Bryant said the air is full of excitement this time of year. “You feel like you’re doing something a little bit more. You’re not just doing something to try and make money. You’re doing something and trying to make a change to help someone have a great family experience,” he said. The pumpkin patch is open everyday from noon until 6 P.M. until October 31st. The goal is to feed 250 families this Thanksgiving.
