Shiloh Nat. Park to host special children’s program

SHILOH, Tenn. –Weaving a great time… children’s program coming to Shiloh!

According to information received from Shiloh National Military Park, next Saturday a fun and creative program will be available to kids. On Saturday, October 15, at 10:00 a.m. children can join Shiloh rangers in learning the ancient art of basket weaving.

During the program, children can create their own basket, learning something new and finding ways to help the environment.

In a statement from the release, Shiloh National Military Park Superintendent, Allen Etheridge said, “The weaving of baskets is as old as the history of man, so teaching kids this craft within the setting of the ancient Shiloh Indian Mounds seems very appropriate.”

In ancient times, baskets had many uses including holding and transporting food, clothing, and planting supplies. Today’s society relies greatly on plastic containers which contribute to pollution. Learning the skill of basket weaving provides an environmentally friendly alternative.

The basket weaving program will take place Saturday, October 15, at 10:00 a.m. at the Shiloh Indian Mounds shelter.

This event is open to children 6-years-old and up, space is limited and those interested should register by calling the park at (731) 689-5696.
