JACKSON, Tenn. — The spookiest holiday of the year is just one day away, and to make sure there’s no tricks and just treats this Halloween the Jackson Police Department will be out in full force. “We’re asking that everyone exercise a lot of safety,” Jackson Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Derick Tisdale said. “Be cautious, not scared but cautious.” More officers than ever before will be on patrol this Halloween watching from the ground to the sky, all to keep you safe. “These officers will be out there in an effort to have high visibility in the neighborhoods, to help ease some of the anxiety,” Tisdale said. They also are sharing a few tips, such as trick or treating with a flash light so you can be seen. “Wear some type of reflective tape or bring out a light,” Tisdale said. “Make sure they have that on their person so it makes them a little bit more visible.” Officers also are sending out a warning before your little goblins and monsters fill their bags with sweets and treats. “To make sure it is exactly what it should be — candy,” Tisadale said. “So someone isn’t trying to place some kind of joke or trick and your child accidentally ingests something that could cause harm.” But that’s why officers said they’re saturating the city — to make sure there’s no tricks, just treats. Here are some more tips from the Jackson Police Dept – – Know your trick-or-treater’s route. – Take a flashlight. – Be sure costumes, shoes and treat bags are safe. – Remind kids not to enter strangers’ homes or cars. – Set rules about not eating treats until kids get home, and inspect all treats before allowing kids to eat them. – Candy that has been opened should be thrown away, and homemade treats or fruit inspected closely. – Remember that drivers have a hard time seeing people, especially at dusk. – Never cross the street from between parked cars. – Watch open flames from jack-o-lanterns as they can catch costumes and long wigs on fire. – Make sure that fake knives, swords and guns are made from cardboard or other flexible materials to avoid accidental injury or worse, have them mistaken for the real thing.
