John Christie accepts plea deal

JACKSON, Tenn. — A new plea deal has been struck in the case of John Christie who was charged in the 2013 death of his wife, Brittany Christie. Christie pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and tampering with evidence. Christie was accused of injecting his wife with heroin until she overdosed. This plea deal will allow Christie to only remain in prison until January 2016, and then undergo intense probation. Once Christie is released in January, he would then be required to reside in ‘Project WIT’, a halfway home in Memphis. “This plea deal is not only what’s best for the state, It’s also best for the state, for the victim’s family. It’s best for everyone,” said Christie’s attorney, Brandon Newman. According to special prosecutor Paul Haggerman, this new deal will give Christie the opportunity to reform his life. “I hope he has the chance to put his life together, and take advantage of the opportunity given to him, to get a job, be clean, and be a productive citizen.” In addition to completing probation, Christie will also have to pay Brittany Christie’s family for her funeral and other expenses. According to Haggerman, Brittany’s family is very supportive of the new plea deal Back in 2014, Christie was originally charged with first degree murder, those charges were later reduced to second degree murder, and most recently, reckless homicide. If Christie does not successfully complete the probation program, he will be sent back to jail.
