More than $725 million is waiting to be claimed; some could be yours

JACKSON, Tenn. — There’s more than $725 million waiting to be claimed by residents in the state of Tennessee. “I think that’s an awful big amount of money, but it may go back 50, 60 years,” Jackson resident Vic Wallace said. The Tennessee Department of Treasury is hoping people will come forward to claim what’s theirs — money that businesses hand over each year. “Those businesses turn it over to us, and it’s our job to get it back into the hands of Tennesseans,” Shelli King with the Department of Treasury said. King said the previous fiscal year, which ended June 30, there were well over 30,000 claims filed and more than $40 million returned. After going to the website, www.ClaimItTN.gov, type your name and click search. Your claimed money should be in your mailbox within 8 to 10 weeks. “Some people think it’s not worth the time and effort to claim $50 or $20 they have out there, but hopefully the website makes the process easier,” King said. The treasury department said there will not be a fee to pay through the department, and if there is, you’re working through another organization. The largest claim in Tennessee’s history is $1.2 million. If you’d like to talk to someone on the phone, call the Unclaimed Property Division at 615-741-6499.
