Henry County kicks off Deputies for the Hungry deer drive

HENRY COUNTY, Tenn. — The sheriff’s department’s annual Deputies for the Hungry program kicked off Monday. The program gives inmates, deputies and hunters alike, the opportunity to feed the hungry. “The Deputies for the Hungry program, that is something we’ve been doing for several years, and it gives the opportunity for the hunters to go out,” Henry County Sheriff Monte Belew said. “We’re very blessed with a huge deer population in Henry County.” Sheriff Belew says that it’s all about giving back to the community. The program also gives Henry County Jail inmates the opportunity to step out from behind bars, and into the kitchen. Jay Patterson, an inmate, says it’s an awesome program. “It’s a good feeling to give back and it’s a privileged to be out here doing this rather than being incarcerated all the time.” Sheriff Belew is hoping to increase the number of deer donations this year with a new incentive. “Every time you bring in a deer and donate it to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office we’ll give you a tag, and that tag allows you to be put in a drawing for a Ruger 210 deer hunting rifle,” Belew said. This year, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office is hoping to bring in more than 200 deer.
