Ex-Globetrotter to students: Learn and practice
FULTON, Miss. (AP) — A former member of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team tells students at the Itawamba Attendance Center to learn and to “practice, practice, practice.”
The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports that Michael “Memphis” Douglas said at a recent assembly that students must keep trying.
To demonstrate, he called third-grader Cortez Stephens from the audience, then challenged him to grab a basketball off the floor. Every time Cortez reached, Douglas stepped in his path, no matter how the boy juked and dodged.
Finally, Cortez dived between Douglas’ legs and snagged the ball. The crowd erupted in applause and laughter. So did Douglas.
Then he said, once you set a goal you have to overcome obstacles. In his words: “You go around obstacles, you go over obstacles, or you go through obstacles.”
