Man in custody after aggravated assault, shots fired in Martin
MARTIN, Tenn. — The Martin Police Department has released details on a Sunday morning incident involving shots fired.
29-year-old Jonathan Jones, of Sharon, Tennessee, is facing charges of aggravated assault, discharge of a firearm, and evading arrest.
According to an incident report, a Martin Police officer responded to a residence on Peach Street around 9:56 a.m. on November 6 in reference to a domestic assault and possible shots fired.
The report states both parties involved had left the area prior to the officer’s arrival, but the officer spoke with four witnesses on scene.
Witnesses stated they overheard shouting coming from the residence, and that they heard a female victim shout “just kill me” shortly before a gunshot was heard.
Following the gunshot, two of the witnesses say they observed Jones leaving the scene in his vehicle.
According to the report, after clearing the scene, the officer identified Jones’ vehicle and attempted to perform a traffic stop, however the vehicle continued driving.
The report says the vehicle then stopped on Jones Street, where the suspect was taken into custody to be booked at the Martin Police Department.
The report says a 9mm shell casing was recovered from the scene, as well as a Stoeger STR-9 pistol that matched the casing found in the vehicle.
According to the report, once the officer arrived at the Martin Police Department, he made contact with the victim, who stated she and Jones had been arguing and she left the residence. The victim stated she later returned to get some belongings, and they continued arguing. According to the victim, Jones punched her in the face, prompting her to hit him with a Febreeze bottle. The victim says she then left the home with her kids when Jones followed her outside and shot a gun into the air.
Jones is currently in custody at the Weakley County Detention Center pending further action.
