Committee Meets to Consider Funding Non-Profits

JACKSON, Tenn. – The City of Jackson does not just fund city services with its budget. A portion of taxpayer money is allocated to support the city’s non-profit groups. Thursday, representatives from non-profits around the city made their pitch to city councilmen for a portion of that budget. The Non-Profit Review Committee met with the agencies so they could explain their needs and answer any questions about how the city’s funds would be used. “I think our non-profits are part of a backbone of a great city,” said Councilman Ernest Brooks II. “They have all done some extraordinary work.” Brooks added the committee strives to make the process open, fair and transparent. Committee members said due to the tightness of the budget, they are considering requests on a case-by-case basis. “I think it demonstrates our commitment to non-profits for the work they do,” added Brooks. “It also is our way of saying thank you.” The city council members must have a budget in place by June 30.
