Heavy Rains Cause Flooding, Damage

JACKSON, Tenn.-A tree fell on a Jeep around 7:30 a.m., Thursday on North Royal Street in Jackson causing damage and tying up traffic for over half an hour. The driver of the vehicle, Don Mullins was not hurt. “I was just sitting there listening to my radio waiting on the bus to leave and next thing I know something was laying across my Jeep. I thought a car hit me. That is, the jolt that it did, but everything is cool,” said Don Muillins. In Bemis, streets had to be closed due to the flooding. In east Jackson, the problem was similar, more flooding. Jennifer Hughes has lived on Gates Street for more than 20 years. When it rains she calls the street “Lake Gates.” “It’s frustrating enough that my grandmother who stays right next door to us, she is 97 years old and in the case of an emergency, we would have to call the firefighters to get her to dry land,” said Jennifer Hughes. On a scale of one to ten, Hughes said the flooding problem on Gates Street is a 12. “There is oil and transmission fluid all mixed up in the water and we have little kids who like to come out and play in the puddles. They can’t even do that because the street is technically flooded,” said Hughes.
