Person of interest in Gibson Co. homicide is killed in officer-involved shooting

GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn. — A person of interest in a deadly Sunday shooting outside Humboldt has been killed by officers, according to officials with the sheriff’s office.

The Gibson County chief deputy said officers caught up with Michael Thomason, 56, Monday morning at a family member’s home just outside Milan where he was killed in an officer-involved shooting.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Public Information Officer Josh DeVine said Gibson County authorities were attempting to bring Thomason in for questioning.

“They actually wound up spotting a vehicle that they believe Thomason stole following the homicide that occurred in Humboldt,” DeVine said.

While searching the property, the investigators had some trouble entering a shed on the property. DeVine says that’s when local authorities called the Milan SWAT team to help enter the building.

“The situation escalated from there, and law enforcement officers wound up firing their weapons, killing Thomason. He died here at the scene,” DeVine said.

The TBI did not release any further details on what happened inside the shed. However, DeVine said investigators found a weapon they believed to be Thomason’s.

Investigators say Thomason was seen leaving a home Sunday in the 200 block of Pleasant Hill Road where a man was found shot to death.

Deputies would not comment on Thomason’s relationship to the victim.
