US attorney’s office reviewing black teen’s fatal shooting
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – U.S. Attorney Edward Stanton III says his office is reviewing a white Memphis police officer’s fatal shooting of a black teenager.
The family of 19-year-old Darius Stewart had asked federal prosecutors to step in after a local grand jury declined to indict Officer Connor Schilling. The local prosecutor had recommended charges of voluntary manslaughter and use of a weapon during the commission of a dangerous felony.
Police say Schilling fatally shot Stewart during a fight at a traffic stop on July 17.
Stanton announced the federal review on Monday. He said it was ongoing but declined to answer questions about it.
Carlos Moore, an attorney for Stewart’s father, said he does not expect this to stop the expected Tuesday release of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s file on the shooting.
