Vandals damage Christmas decorations, church in Bemis
JACKSON, Tenn. — Vandals recently damaged Christmas decorations and a church in Bemis, according to residents.
David Matthews said he has been hit twice. “Just tore them up,” he said.
Matthews said someone slashed his Thomas the Train and snowman inflatables and damaged his Christmas lights. “There’s no reason,” he said. “There’s nothing to gain from doing the stuff that they done.”
Down the street at First Baptist Church of Bemis, members said someone knocked out about a dozen windows. Associate Pastor John Norvell said he found the damage Saturday. “They think they’re having fun, but they’re causing all kind of trouble for other people,” he said.
Norvell said repairs could cost between $5,000 and $6,000. “Well, I just hope they can catch the guys and bring them to justice,” he said.
This weekend, police said someone also broke out a window at a house nearby and slashed tires on multiple vehicles along North Missouri and South Highland. “I feel like it’s more than one and they’re just showing off or just being a scrooge altogether,” Jackson and Madison County Crime Stoppers Director Mike Johnson said.
Matthews said the vandals cost him several hundred dollars. “Whoever done it will get their Christmas one way or the other,” he said.
Matthews started putting up his decorations in October and said this will not stop him from possibly adding even more next year.
Police said they have not made any arrests.
