MILAN, Tenn. – One West Tennessee school district is getting creative in helping their students ace the TCAP test. “We do a lot of practice in class for what it’s going to be like,” said 7th grader, Emily Bradford. Students at Milan Middle, and at the elementary school are gearing up for TCAPs in less than two weeks. The tests may count for 15 percent of their final average, but that does not mean they are nervous. “I think it will be easy personally, because my teachers have prepared me very well,” said 8th grader, Will Berry. This year, Milan Middle School officials told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News they wanted to try something new. They are writing encouraging notes to students along with some candy, that say ‘You were mint to succeed.'” School teachers and staff have also come up with a creative video, which they will show to students at their TCAP rally. “Just to encourage the kids and let them know that we know they’re ready, and just to let them know that we’re all in this together,” said Kelly Todd, an assistant principal. Students said they have come up with their own ways to make the test easier. “Circle all the answers that’s important, and then pick out and write them down on paper. Pick them all out and see which ones you like,” said 7th grader, Kameron Whitmore. Other tips? Get a good night’s sleep, eat a good breakfast, and relax. Students across the state in grades three through eight take the achievement test, while the high schoolers take the end of course exams. Milan school officials said they hope to have their “quick” scores back before the end of the school year.
