TCA’s Goldsmith named 5th Quarter Player of the Year
NORTHWEST JACKSON, Tenn. –
Opposing coaches knew what to expect when playing TCA’s football team.
Number seven is always a threat to score.
“I’ve had over 10 FBS/FCS level players I’ve coached,” head coach Blake Butler said. “He’s the best athlete I’ve ever had.”
Andrew Goldsmith left a indelible footprint in Trininty’s football program.
But his senior year didn’t start on a high note.
“We were in a critical moment and we had to start stringing some wins together,” Goldsmith said about Week 5 of the season.
At that time, the Lions were 0-4.
Coach Butler decided it was time for a change.
“Honestly, I was nervous because me trying out as quarterback in previous years wasn’t really — didn’t go too well,” Golsmith said.
The running back turned quarterback couldn’t have predicted what happened next.
His head coach wasn’t surprised at the transition to under center.
“He put up numbers almost unheard of,” Butler told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness Sports. “For a kid to have that level of success, but at the same time be humble.”
With well over 3,000 rushing yards, the Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Winner came a few hundred yards short of the single-season state record.
His video-game like numbers developed into a nickname. Goldsmith’s mom was the last to find out.
“Are you “pony’s” mom. She was like who,” Goldsmith laughed. “She didn’t know who they was talking about.”
“If he laughs, you’ll hear him anywhere on campus,” Butler smiled. “Got one of those infectious laughs. He’s having a good time.”
Goldsmith’s top three schools as of now are University of Tennessee at Martin, Western Carolina and Navy. He says he’s in no rush to make a decision.
