Alamo opens city tornado shelter

ALAMO, Tenn. — For the third time since its construction, the city of Alamo opened its tornado shelter Wednesday.

Alamo Mayor Tommy Green said they made the decision to open the shelter just after noon.

The building is built to hold about 770 people, according to Green. “It is designed to protect you from a tornado,” Green said.

The shelter is open to anyone but not intended for long-term stays. “It’s not designed to protect you from foul weather,” Green said, “so we want it used when it’s needed.”

Officials discourage bringing sleeping bags and personal items since space in the safe room is limited.
