JACKSON, Tenn. – Several West Tennesseans ran in the Boston Marathon Monday, which ended with terror at the finish line. WBBJ 7 Eyewitness news spoke with two local men. One who had just finished the race, and the other who was closing in on the finish line. 10 minutes before the devastating explosion, Dr. Joe Peters of Counce crossed the finish line, and was just three block away. “I was actually putting my warmup suit back on,” said Peters. “I was sitting on the street and I heard this really loud explosion.” He said the aftermath was pandemonium with people running away from two bombs that had just gone off. In the madness, Peters scrambled to find his wife. “My wife was supposed to meet me at a certain intersection,” said Peters. “She was probably two blocks away from the explosion, but on another street.” While Peters fought through the crowd to find his wife, Jacksonian Scott Stader was less than a half mile from the finish line. “( I ) kind of noticed that people were just stopping in the middle of the street and not running,” said Stader. “Then someone turned around and said the race is over. We were flustered by that and didn’t know exactly what was going on. Then somebody else told us that two bombs had gone off.” Stader was trying to best his personal record marathon time when the race came to a grinding halt. “You know, my doing well or anything like that is a far cry from being the emphasis right now,” said Stader. Both Dr. Peters and Stader were uninjured.
