HUB Classic allows players, coaches a chance to give back
JACKSON, Tenn — Teams across West Tennessee get their final practices in Sunday before holiday tournaments tip off.
“It’s great to get the kids involved in tournament action, and its great talent, but more importantly all the proceeds are going to a phenomenal cause,” North Side Boys Head Basketball Coach, Tony Brown said.
But Area Relief Ministries’ “Hub Classic” gives local players a chance to give back.
“Its kind of a dual thing,” Executive Director for ARM, Lisa Peoples told WBBJ Sunday. “We wanted to do a fundraiser that is not done by everyone, and we also wanted to do something that’s community and family friendly right after the holidays.”
All proceeds from the three day tournament go directly the Hub Club, an after-school and summer camp program for kids in the Hub City.
That’s something area coaches and players say means more than the game itself.
“I think when you’re in it as a high school athlete, you don’t realize how much it impacts the rest of your life until you get into your real life,” Haywood Girls Head Basketball Coach, Whitney Baird explained. “The more you grow and mature the more you understand and realize we as coaches are teaching our players a lot more than just X’s and O’s in basketball.”
“Never take for granted your opportunity to play basketball,” Brown said. “To actually give back something and the kids get to participate in that, it’s great.”
“It’s a great opportunity for us as a team to get better, and we’re always working to give back to the community any chance it’s possible,” North Side senior guard, Nahjee Rumph said after finishing practice Sunday. “Its a great feeling. I mean we’re playing the game of basketball and giving back. That’s what every basketball player dreams of.”
