‘Bicycle guy’ serves customers at Memphis airport
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Dion Thorne is a mobile concessionaire at Memphis International Airport.
The self-described bicycle guy pedals around, food vending cart in tow, to serve gates that aren’t near storefronts.
The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/1YGP636 ) reports the airport’s principal food and beverage concessionaire, HMSHost, put the mobile cart in action earlier this year. Thorne, who has worked for HMSHost at the airport for five years, won the job.
Being mobile is probably a winning strategy these days as airport officials plan more than $110 million in moves to modernize and expand Concourse B and make it the main place for arrivals and departures.
Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority officials say the airport has 25 concession outlets, compared to 50 or so during its heyday as a hub for the former Northwest Airlines.
