Homes still underwater in Hardin County

HARDIN COUNTY, Tenn. — You can no longer see where Savannah ends and Cump begins because the Tennessee River has taken over.

Screen Shot 2015-12-29 at 5.54.04 PMThe river looked more like a lake Tuesday afternoon, and many homes that sit on the riverbank were still unreachable.

“It hasn’t been out in a long time, but it’s kind of scary knowing it’s going to come out,” Sue Willard said. Her family has lived on the river for more than 10 years. “I have three brothers over there. Two of them have lots and one has a house, and then I have a sister over there and a nephew.”

Willard said most people left before the flooding got bad, but some are still living in their homes despite the flooding.

She said two of her best friends are still staying in their home in this neighborhood.

“They don’t have any electricity but they are staying there,” she said. “They can still get down their road, but they are getting ready to move out I think.”

She says they see flooding all of the time, but not this high.

“It don’t usually go over the bank over there where the houses are,” she said. “I’ve been by several times. It’s worse today than it has been.”

EMA Director Melvin Martin said he believes the water will begin to dry out by Thursday.
