Jackson council votes to join state emergency radio system
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The Jackson City Council has voted to join the deal Hinds County worked out to integrate the county’s 911 emergency communications system into the state’s Wireless Information Network.
The Clarion-Ledger reports some council members blasted county supervisors Tuesday for the deal with the state. They say Jackson was left with little or no option but to join the county in the state system for the city’s police officers and firefighters to have a workable emergency radio system.
The Hinds County Board of Supervisors voted earlier this year to join the state system. The county voted to buy a new, roughly $8 million system and have it become part of the state system. All municipalities were given the option to join the county system. Once operational, the state will maintain the system.
