Columbus mayor IDs 5 finalist for police chief

COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) – Columbus Mayor Robert Smith has released the names of the five finalists for the Mississippi city’s police chief opening.

Smith told The Commercial Dispatch Wednesday the city council will interview the finalists on Jan. 19.

The five finalists are:

-Curtis Brame, a commander with the North Chicago Police Department in Illinois.

-Geoffrey S. Herweg, the deputy chief of police in Lovington, New Mexico.

-Oscar Lewis III, the chief of police in Waynesboro. He previously worked 20 years with the Columbus Police Department.

-Arthur C. McClung, the chief of police in Moss Point.

-Fred Shelton, the interim Columbus chief since November.

Columbus is seeking a new chief to replace Tony Carleton, who resigned from the position in November following the police-involved shooting death of Ricky Ball on Oct. 16.
