Lumberton mayoral election may see challenge

LUMBERTON, Miss. (AP) – The mayoral election in Lumberton has taken yet another turn, as the city will have to wait at least a week to declare its next permanent mayor.

After Tuesday’s runoff election, Kent Crider ended the night with 197 votes to Jonathan Griffith’s 192, with 12 affidavit ballots remaining to be counted. After those affidavits were tallied Wednesday, Crider was left on top, with 201 votes to Griffith’s 193.

But now, Griffith plans to challenge the results of the election, based largely on seven ballots that were rejected.

Crider, who is the current a city alderman, tells The Hattiesburg American says some of the ballots were rejected because the voters had felony records, and he feels the election process was followed by the book.
