Hattiesburg police seek to auction seized, surplus items
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) – The Hattiesburg Police Department is requesting city council’s permission to auction off several seized and abandoned surplus items including 761 weapons in their evidence locker.
Evidence technician Eric Proulx tells The Hattiesburg American (http://hatne.ws/1SwL4oS) the department takes in about 3,400 pieces of evidence every year. Proulx says the majority of that is actual evidence in regards to cases, but we also take in a lot of items such as found property, lawnmowers, bicycles and all kinds of tools.
Proulx says if all the property were to be auctioned off, the department could raise about $100,000 for the city’s general fund. As for the guns, he says those would only be auctioned off to dealers with a Federal Firearms License.
