Knox County superintendent stepping down after 8 years
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Knox County Schools Superintendent Jim McIntyre has announced that he is stepping down from his post, saying politics have begun to overshadow the work.
According to multiple media outlets, McIntyre said during a news conference Monday that people’s attention has been all too frequently focused upon himself or other officials, rather than upon the mission of providing children with a good education.
Effective July 8, McIntyre says he will leave the position he has held since July 2008, in exchange for a severance payment equal to one year’s salary.
The school board will meet Jan. 19 to discuss the severance and resignation.
During his tenure, McIntyre faced various criticisms, including over transportation after last year’s fatal bus crash that killed two elementary school students and a teacher’s aide.
