Munford community ‘shocked’ by winning Powerball ticket
MUNFORD, Tenn. — “I was shocked,” Jeremy Pinner said.
On Thursday, Pinner along with millions of other people across the country woke up to the news that three winners had hit the ultimate jackpot in the biggest Powerball lottery ever.
“I never thought it would happen,” Pinner said when he realized one of the winning tickets had been sold in his hometown of Munford.
The tiny community is home to about 6,000 people. Only three stores even sell lottery tickets.
“I wouldn’t have never dreamed it in a million years,” Millie Morey said.
Morey tells WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News she never got around to buying a lottery ticket for this Powerball.
It’s a decision she now laughs at. “I said ‘well, I won’t ever be that lucky anyway.’ And then it hits Mumford,” she said before letting out a giggle.
Lottery officials said the winner in the Volunteer State hasn’t come forward yet.
The winning ticket was sold from Naifah’s Food Mart. On Thursday afternoon, state lottery officials presented the store with a check for $25,000.
While it is possible the winner bought the ticket while passing through or lives in a neighboring state, residents said they hope the millions will stay in Munford.
The jackpot will be split three ways between winners in Florida, California and Tennessee.
