Country musicians mourn loss of Eagles bandleader Glenn Frey
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Country musicians in Nashville mourned the loss of Eagles’ bandleader Glenn Frey as they recalled the band’s timeless impact with their smooth harmonies and memorable lyrics that embodied the cool California country rock sound.
The 67-year-old prolific singer, guitarist and songwriter died Monday of complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia.
Songwriter and singer JD Souther, Frey’s longtime friend and collaborator, said they were both influenced by such classic country artists as Merle Haggard and Hank Williams.
Country music’s biggest stars of the ’90s, including Brooks and Dunn, Vince Gill, Trisha Yearwood and Alan Jackson, even collaborated on an Eagles’ tribute album in 1993. It went multiplatinum and was named album of the year in 1994 by the Country Music Association.
