Memphis mayor selects interim police chief

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Mayor Jim Strickland has selected an interim chief for the Memphis Police Department.

Strickland said Thursday that Michael Rallings will take the position of interim police director on Feb. 1. Rallings takes over for Toney Armstrong, who stepped down as police director on Jan. 7 after serving in the position since April 2011.

Rallings was appointed deputy chief in 2009. He has served as patrolman, sergeant, lieutenant, major and colonel since graduating the police academy in 1990.

A search for a permanent police director continues.
