Corinth mayor wants citizens to vote on tax for city repairs
CORINTH, Miss. (AP) – The mayor of Corinth says he wants to give citizens the option to decide whether to tax themselves to improve the city’s infrastructure.
The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports Corinth Mayor Tommy Irwin is urging the legislature to allow the city to vote on a sales tax.
Irwin says the money would be used to repair three major thoroughfares in the city that are used by thousands of people each day. He says if the legislature passes a bill to allow the vote, the election would be in the fall.
The sales tax would be increased from 7 percent to 7.25 percent. Irwin says the costs of the repairs could be around $6 million to $7 million. He says once the work is paid for, the tax would cease.
